An apprentice mechanic who drove a friend’s car carelessly late at night in an empty car park was caught by police on a routine patrol.

George MacIver revved the engine loudly and didn’t switch on the vehicle’s lights before driving at excessive speed around the Eastfield Way car park at Inverness Shopping Park on January

31.

He admitted driving carelessly and was fined £470. But the 18-year-old kept his driving licence after Sheriff David Harvie heard from defence solicitor Ken Ferguson.

MacIver, of Maclennan Crescent, Inverness, also assured the sheriff: “I won’t be doing this again.”

Mr Ferguson said his client’s licence was vital to him completing his apprenticeship with a small local firm, adding: “He should be very careful with his driving licence from now on and this has brought it home to him.”
