Police stopped a motorist who had passed them because they detected a strong smell of cannabis coming from the vehicle.

Officers intercepted 26 year old Stephen Hay about 4pm on February 27, 2021 on Harbour Road, Inverness and a saliva test proved positive for the Class B drug.

A subsequent blood test revealed Hay had 7mcgs of a cannabis metabolite in his system when the safe limit is 2mcgs.

Police then carried out a routine search of his car and found a Stanley knife blade in it.

As he had no reasonable excuse for having it he was charged with illegal possession of a blade in a public place.

Hay of Church Street, Inverness admitted the offences and was fined a total of £550 and banned from driving for a year.

Defence solicitor Clare Russell explained that he had the knife for opening packaging at his work and forgot it was there.
