Passengers left to fend for themselves at Aviemore after train breakdown

Rail travellers have been left stranded and frustrated on the Highland Main Line this afternoon after a train broke down.

With no word of apology, a notice was posted on the platform explaining simply:

"Broken down train between Aviemore and Kingussie.

"Delays, alterations and cancellations expected.

"Very limited transport available.

"Please make own arrangements."

One stranded traveller making her way home to Kincraig, Eppy Mackay, has posted: "Train journeys have not improved much for me.

"A quick trip to Glasgow sees me returning via Aberdeen and Inverness!

"A freight train has seen fit to freeze its brakes somewhere between Kingussie and Aviemore, blocking the north line.

"Settling down to enjoy the countryside - at least the sun is shining."
