Students at Drakies Primary School in Inverness went above and beyond to support the appeal with a week-long fundraising extravaganza.

In the week leading up to Remembrance weekend, children organised and took part to various activities – such as the decoration of poppy biscuits, beat the goalie, a design your own poppy crafts initiative, and leading a community café for a day – to raise money for Poppyscotland’s largest annual fundraiser.

All events welcomed donations from parents, family members, and members of the local community and a total of £533 was raised for the cause.

Poppyscotland’s regional fundraiser for the North of Scotland and veteran, Robin Phillips, said: “The tenacity of the pupils at Drakies Primary School is really inspiring. It was a pleasure to spend time with them in their Remembrance and Mindfulness Garden during the humbling Cheque Presentation. And, the Oak Sapling, donated by Legion Scotland, is a tremendous touch.

“Arranging a spectrum of engaging and rewarding activities in the lead-up to Remembrance weekend has ensured that Drakies Primary School has raised a tremendous amount of money in support of the Scottish Poppy Appeal.

“This money will be used to support Poppyscotland’s vital work. We are proud of the 365 day a year support we offer to our Armed Forces community, and I know for a fact that the money raised by Drakies Primary School will lead to at least one life being improved.”

A cheque was presented today (January 10) at the school’s Remembrance and Mindfulness Garden, which was opened in 2023.

Staff and pupils at Drakies Primary School felt “compelled to support the Scottish Poppy Appeal”, according to Scott Callander, Head Teacher at Drakies Primary School.

He said: “We understand the sacrifice that our servicemen, servicewomen, and their families (serving, reservists and veterans) made and continue to make. Children in P6/7 and P7 learned throughout the course of term 2 about WW1, WW2 and current conflicts.

“Our janitor, Richard Alsop, is a proud veteran and shared his experiences with our children. Staff and children at Drakies understand the important work that Poppyscotland does to support our servicemen, servicewomen, and their families.

“Therefore, we felt compelled to support the Scottish Poppy Appeal.”
