INVERNESS has been named the UK’s second most entertaining city in a nationwide poll.

The study by online gaming site MrGamez.com rated the city highly because of its proximity to Loch Ness – with fantastic opportunities for monster hunting – as well as the fact that its residents are regularly named as among the happiest in the country.

The poll saw the Highland capital named most entertaining place in Scotland, with Glasgow coming in at number 17 and Aberdeen a lowly 26. Compiling ratings for cinemas, bars and restaurants, theatres, stadiums, gigs, and reviews from the Trip Advisor website and others, Inverness achieved a score of 45.5 out of a maximum possible 70.

Only Oxford – with a score of 46 – prevented the city taking the top spot.

The news was welcomed by Dougie Brown, duty manager at the city’s Ironworks music venue.

"When you look at the size of Inverness as a reasonably small city you have to say that it definitely punches well above its weight in what it can offer," he said.

"Apart from the Ironworks if you think about Eden Court – that’s just a fantastic facility to have right in the heart of the city.

"Then you’ve got Loch Ness just down the road for the Groove dance music festival and, if you believe some of the stories that have been going round about T in the Park possibly being no more, then it might not be long before you have Belladrum as the country’s biggest music festival right on our doorstep.

"There’s a lot of exciting stuff going on and sometimes it’s good when surveys like this come along to remind you of that."

It is not the first poll Inverness has scored highly in. Despite having a reputation as being the place where the most perfect English is spoken, earlier this year it was named the UK’s swearing capital, with 38 per cent of Invernessisans admitting to using profanities. This ranking was disputed locally.
