Inverness MP joins forces with local agencies to mark Challenge Poverty Week

Drew Hendry is urging families who are experiencing welfare support issues to seek help at a special drop-in surgery.
The MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey already holds weekly advice surgeries for constituents and those attending the session this Thursday, between noon and 1pm, will be able to meet and discuss their specific issues with welfare support and housing experts.
Challenge Poverty Week is a Scotland-wide campaign designed to show that poverty exists in Scotland and affects us all, that people can work to end it, that it restricts people’s ability to take part in society and that it can be solved by boosting incomes and reducing costs of living.
Mr Hendry said: “It is difficult to know where to turn when you are dealing with the impacts of UK government welfare reforms and even though my office has already helped thousands of constituents with issues, I worry there are many others suffering in silence.”
He said anyone affected by Universal Credit, PIP, housing or any other welfare issues to come along and speak to someone.
He added: “Poverty restricts people’s lives in so many ways – and it’s women, children, minority groups and disabled people who are often affected the most.
“Following the surgery event, I will be meeting with local agencies to see how we can help improve the outcomes for families whose daily lives continue to be impacted by harsh UK government welfare reforms.”
Thursday’s advice surgery is open to all and will be held at the Merkinch Community Centre.
