Police clocked David Wood speeding.

A motorist heading north on the A9 after a visit to see his mother didn't check his speedometer as he came down the hill at Daviot.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that police were carrying out speed checks on the stretch of dual carriageway and clocked 28-year-old David Wood driving at 111mph at 9.55pm on November 22 last year.

After he was stopped, Wood of Mackintosh Road, Inverness told officers: "On my speedo, it was just under 90."

Sheriff Gary Aitken queried Wood's response and defence solicitor John MacColl explained: "It was the speed he was doing at the time he checked it when he realised the police wanted him to stop.

"It is a matter of regret for him this error of judgement. Traffic was light at the time."

Sheriff Aitken fined Wood £565 and banned him from driving for three weeks.

He told him: "At that kind of speed, if something unexplained happened the consequences could have been very severe and you would not be here at all."
