A man spent months trying to rekindle a relationship with an old flame.

David Mackenzie and his partner split up just over four years ago. But Inverness Sheriff Court heard that the 42-year- old spray painter couldn't accept that the relationship had ended and kept communicating with the woman in an effort to get back together.

Fiscal depute Emily Hood told Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald that Mackenzie – then of Glenshiel Place, Inverness, but who has now moved to County Kildare in the Irish Republic – followed the woman to hospital.

"When asked to leave he did, but he followed her on to a bus and shouted about how much he loved her," Ms Hood said.

She added that Mackenzie also went round to the woman's house and then, when he sent her a 10-page letter, saying how much her loved her, she contacted the police.

Defence solicitor John MacColl told the court: "They had been in a relationship and had a bit of a fall-out about something silly he had done but it was not criminal.

"His efforts were not aggressive or abusive. He had an appointment at the hospital also, knew that she had one and he took the opportunity to speak to her."

Sheriff Matheson fined Mackenzie, who admitted a stalking charge, £940 and imposed a two year long non-harassment order to prevent him from contacting his ex.
