A man who accused his other half of being unfaithful and carried out a campaign of domestic abuse has been spared jail.

Iain Mackay (65) appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court on indictment where he admitted engaging in a course of conduct that caused his former partner fear or alarm.

The father-of-one, of Upper Kessock Street, Inverness, shout and swore at the woman, uttered derogatory remarks, accused her of cheating on him and locked her outside their home address as well as striking her laptop, the court heard.

The offences took place in 2017, two years after the pair met.

Sheriff Sara Matheson imposed a two year non-harassment order after saying she had “just marginally been persuaded” to not send him to jail.

Mackay was also put on a community payback order with social work to supervise him for 18 months and he will be tagged and banned from leaving his home between 7pm and 7am for the next four months.

The sentence was a direct alternative to custody.
