An Inverness man who caused thousands of pounds of damage to another man’s car has been given a chance to stay out of trouble.

Billy Hunter (32) used a metal bar to hit the windscreen and panels of the vehicle after feeling threatened by the occupants.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that the driver of the car was looking for his son following an earlier incident on June 26 last year.

However when he turned up outside Hunter’s girlfriend’s house on Assynt Road things quickly escalated.

The court heard Hunter started smashing up the vehicle in response to what he perceived to be aggression from the driver.

Fiscal depute Emma MacEwan said that the damage was just shy of £3000 for repairs and due to the value of the car being less that the insurance company was refusing to pay out.

Hunter admitted the breach of the peace but defence agent Neil Wilson said there was a feeling of “animosity” between the two parties due to earlier events.

He added that his client felt “angry and threatened” by the approach of the car.

Sheriff David Harvie deferred sentence on Hunter for three months for him to be of good behaviour and to carry on with an unrelated drug testing and treatment order.

Hunter was released on bail meantime to the address in Assynt Road.
