A 54-year-old man who had been drinking extensively after receiving bad news about a friend frightened some local schoolchildren by shouting and swearing at them.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Hector MacLean, of Crown Street, had emerged from his home on January 24 and targeted the pupils before turning his attention to two construction workers and challenged them to fight.

Defence solicitor Willie Young told Sheriff Sara Matheson: "He had been drinking heavily the night before and it carried on in the morning after receiving bad news about a friend.

"He does not know what came over him."

MacLean was fined £245 after admitting threatening or abusive behaviour.
