Inverness Ice Centre is on a mission to stay at the heart of the community, and is tackling the rising costs of energy with creativity.

In order to continue providing sporting facilities for people across the region, including ice skating, hockey and curling, seven days a week, the Ice Centre board has decided to defrost the centre from April 10 until July 1. It will host a variety of off-ice events during this time in order to generate some more cash flow for the sports and recreation charity.

Events include the popular, annual Strictly Inverness from May 10 - 13, which will also raise funds for the vital Highland Hospice.

Sporting fans can look forward to enjoying Professional Boxing on May 20, Highland Amateur Boxing on May 27 and Professional Darts on June 2.

The Ice Centre is also hosting the highly-anticipated, sold-out Callum Beattie gig on June 3. Support acts for the event include local artists Dylan Tierney and Callum MacPhail.

Folk who enjoy a tipple or two can enjoy the return of Ness Gin Fest on June 17, where the ‘best’ independent gin distillers will be in town, for you to sample all the juicy flavours. The Gin Fest will run over two sessions, in the afternoon and evening, and will include live music, a fizz and cocktail bar and the popular Instagram station.

Also making a return is the Whisky Over Ice event, on June 24. Those who love the golden elixir can meet up to 20 of the top distilleries in Scotland, and have access to some limited edition goodies.

Speaking about the events, Gordon Barron chief executive of Inverness Ice Centre said: “We are really looking forward to hosting a variety of events this summer. We are passionate about the longevity of the Ice Centre for the community, and this is why we have made the decision to defrost the ice for three months.

“We are working with local partners in order to make sure that these events are superb, and run to the best standard. Our Gin Festival and Whisky Over Ice were great successes in 2022, so we are hoping that they will be even better this year!”

With the Ice Centre shaping up to be a hub of entertainment this year, it has also decided to support Highland Heroes this year as the entertainment sponsor. Highland Heroes recognises those across the region who are making a difference in their local community.

Speaking about why they have chosen to sponsor the entertainment at Highland Heroes, Karen McBey head of events and communications at the Ice Centre said: “All nominees richly deserve the recognition and we are just pleased that we can help in some way.

“We feel we are at the heart of the Highland community and it just seems like a natural fit to support the Highland Heroes who do so much for this community also.”
