An Inverness radio presenter is confined to her hotel in Spain after the country went into lockdown in a bid to beat COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Grace Nicoll (28), who works with MFR, was mid-flight to Tenerife when the country took the decision to confine people to their homes after Europe became the epicentre of the virus.

Ms Nicoll is on holiday with her boyfriend David Miele at the Costa Adeje resort in the south west of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.

Ms Nicoll said: "We flew out here on Friday from Edinburgh with Ryanair. At no time before, or after, our flight did anyone mention that there was a problem. They didn't say a thing to us on Ryanair.

"Some bars and restaurants were still open at the weekend, as the ban was due to come in on Monday. So we went out, and the bar we were in was closed down by the police. So it is all a bit surreal.

"Everyone here has been trying to keep our spirits up, and there is quite a community spirit.

"We are allowed to leave the hotel, but only to go to the supermarket and the pharmacy.

"The good news is the hotel bar and the pool are open for now, so it is still nice to be away on holiday."

Ms Nicoll's return flights to Scotland are booked with Easy Jet.

She said: "We thought that we would automatically be booked onto our return flight next Friday, but one of the woman who is also on holiday at the hotel told us to check. And she was right. We had to follow a procedure to rebook a flight home. If the woman had not told us then we would have had to wait until April 1.

"It makes me angry that there is a lack of information about what is happening and that Easy Jet just seem to be doing what they want."

Easy Jet and Ryanair have been contacted for a comment.
