An Inverness headteacher has announced his intention to retire.

Lawrence Sutherland, who has been in the post at Cradlehall Primary School for 20 years, will retire at the end of the academic year.

He has informed parents in a newsletter.

"This decision has not been taken lightly and I will miss this community hugely and will always look back on my time here as a period filled with many wonderful memories shared with some very special people of all ages," he said.

"However, I do believe that, after two years of disruption, our school is in good place to progress into the future under my successor."

The post will be advertised immediately after Easter and a new headteacher is expected to be in place well in advance of the new school year in August, allowing for a smooth transition.
