Highland Council is set to make a popular free parking spot in Inverness city centre a permit-only zone.

The Waterloo Car Park, beside Waterloo Bowling Club just north of Friar’s Bridge, has long been used by motorists as a handy central stop-off for work, shops and services.

In September last year though, new signs and markings appeared, designating parking spaces immediately beside the bowling club as permit-only from April to September, while the rest remained free for use by car, van and motorcycle owners only.

A further laminated sign, added beneath the new signage, reads: “This parking space is reserved for Waterloo Bowling Club use only between April and September.”

Given the makeshift appearance of the new signage, a member of the public contacted the Courier to enquire as to whether it was legitimate.

A Highland Council spokeswoman confirmed it was, and revealed there were proposals in the pipeline to designate the entire car park for permit-only use.

She said: “There are several seasonal permit holder bays on one side of the car park. We will be taking forward proposals to allocate all parking in this car park to a full permit holder car park.”
