A new book which charts the history of professional football in Inverness since the first teams were formed in 1885 is being launched later this week.

Packed with more than 250 photos, Inverness Football Remembered is a trip down memory lane for football fans in the city who have followed Clachnacuddin and Inverness Caledonian Thistle as well as former teams Caledonian, Inverness Thistle and Citadel.

The 136-page book, similar in style to the long-established Inverness Remembered books, has been published by the Inverness Caledonian Thistle Community Trust, High life Highland and Clachnacuddin FC in partnership with the Inverness Courier.

It is one of a number of projects flowing from the launch of the Inverness Football Memories Project in May 2022.

It follows the introduction of Inverness Football Memories on High Life Highland’s Am Baile web site which features more than 400 photographs as well as memories of players and supporters, video clips, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia.

Fittingly, the book will be launched at a gathering of Festive Friends, organised by the ICT Community Trust at Caledonian Stadium on Thursday.

Many of those who attend the monthly Football Memories meetings will be in attendance.

Project co-ordinator, Gordon Fyfe, a director of ICT FC and joint chair of the ICT Community Trust who worked with Jamie Gaukroger, co-ordinator of Am Baile, on the book, said: “The Football Memories Project is proving very popular and complements the well-attended monthly Memories sessions we hold at Caledonian Stadium on the last Friday of every month.

"The Football Memories feature on the Am Baile web site is a big hit with viewers and the publication of the book is a natural second phase of the project.”

Alex Chisholm, chairman of Clachnacuddin FC, said: “We are delighted to be partners in this project, having such a rich history as a club by playing in each and every season since the Highland League was formed in 1893.

"The book is a great capture of football down the ages and it will bring back so many memories for football fans.”

Steve Walsh, chief executive of High Life Highland, said: “This excellent book showcases football in Inverness over the years and is a great read, with so many familiar faces featured in the team and action photographs.

"The Inverness Football Memories Project is proving such a popular feature of the Am Baile web site, meeting the clear demand for capturing memories of football personalities and occasions down the years.

"Indeed, the popularity of the project is demonstrated by the fact that our weekly stories on social media have attracted two million hits since their launch in May of last year. I’m sure the book will be a similar success.”

Steve Barron, managing director of Inverness Courier publisher Highland News and Media, said: “Inverness Football Remembered will stir the memories of football fans of all persuasions.

"What an excellent way to document the historic highs and lows of cheering on your team at Grant Street, Telford Street, up the hill at Kingsmills and in more recent years down the Longman.

"When we heard about the project we wanted to lend as much support as we could – we know how passionate many of our readers are about football – it's important to us too."
