ALCOHOL proved to be the prohibited item most seized by police or security from people entering Inverness Justice Centre which houses the sheriff court.

A Freedom of Information request from the HN to the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service (SCTS) reveals that alcohol was taken off six people between March 30, 2020 and November 22 last year.

However, no drugs were seized during the same period.

One knife was confiscated, and one syringe/needle.

The SCTS said two “miscellaneous” items were taken off people, but it was not specified what they were.

The SCTS was also asked for information on “items stolen from people entering the Inverness Justice Centre” but this is information which the SCTS does not hold.

However, a spokesman said: “No items have been reported to the SCTS as stolen at Inverness Justice Centre for the time period stated.”

The SCTS added: “We take the safety of all court users very seriously.

“We work closely with partners, including the police, to take all reasonable precautions against weapons, potential weapons, or other prohibited items being introduced into court buildings.

“Any item which is considered to be a potential risk to public safety could be confiscated on entering a court building.

“The discovery of any weapon or potential weapon by staff is immediately reported to the police.

“Police officers are deployed in courts across Scotland and carry out a number of duties.

“The objective of police deployment within courts is to provide public reassurance, maintain public
order and prevent intimidation.”
