Community charity Crown Connects has received a welcome funding boost from the National Lottery Community Fund with an award of £9900 to develop its Community Cupboard project.

As a result, the group is recruiting a part time co-ordinator to support the volunteer team and help them grow and improve the service they provide.

A team of around 20 volunteers collects food donations mostly from local supermarkets including Tesco and the Co-op, every night of the week.

They stock the fridge and cupboard which is then open every day from 8am to 8pm to allow members of the public to help themselves. The project helps to reduce food waste from the supermarkets and also helps people get access to fruit, veg, bread and other staples free of charge.

The cupboard is provided by SHIMCA – the Scottish Highlands and Islands and Moray Chinese Association – and is situated at the association's office and Eco Café at 1 Ardconnel Terrace, Inverness.

The co-ordinator role will help to recruit and support volunteers, including young Duke of Edinburgh volunteers who help out with daily checks and cleaning. The post holder will help develop the service, ensuring the cupboard continues to be well managed and well stocked.

The job is a flexible seven hours per week for 12 months at £12 per hour, thanks to the Lottery funding. The deadline for applications is February 21 with details about how to apply available from www.crownconnects.org or crownconnetcsscio@gmail.com

Crown Connects was formed as a Covid emergency support group for the Crown area of Inverness, but has since expanded into a number of community-based activities, projects and initiatives, all aimed at keeping the comunity connected.
