Breast cancer survivor turned charity hiker Gemma McMullan is already miles ahead on the fundraising trail having raised a four-figure sum for breast cancer charity Coppafeel!.

The Inverness native has been preparing to embark on a challenging five-day trek across the Indian Himalayas to increase awareness of the importance that early diagnosis can have on fighting the disease.

Ms McMullan, 38, made a full recovery after a battle with aggressive triple negative breast cancer, which started back in June 2022.

She started her fundraising journey earlier this year, and has so far raised over £5500.

The latest step in her ascent was holding a quiz night, organised by quizmaster James Macleod, at the Smithton Hotel on Saturday, March 9 – an event which contributed £1200 to her total.

The winning team – 'Eight boobs and an Irishman' – kindly donated their cash prize back to the charity.

A raffle, with prizes ranging from a voucher for Rama Radiance Facials to goodies from Boots at Inverness retail park and a £250 Tesco voucher, also contributed to the total.

After the quiz and raffle, local DJ Andrew McGibbon provided the after party with a set of classic dance tunes.

Ms McMullan said: "My training is now well underway with the first hikes now under my belt. I have found them challenging so I have a long way to go to be ready for the rocky terrain and 3000 metre altitudes of India.

"Thank you to everyone who turned out at the quiz night. It was a great turnout. It was great also to get the chance to speak about the charity and how important its message is, as well as to tell everyone about the trek itself.

"Local businesses have been incredibly generous with prize donations. It is the incredible generosity of everyone who has donated and Coppafeel!’s important message that is spurring me on.
