A boy from Inverness is fighting for his life after he nearly drowned in a swimming pool on holiday in Cyprus.

The Daily Record has reported that the six-year-old boy from Inverness was on holiday with his family, in the tourist resort Pafos, when the accident happened.

Last Friday, October 6, the boy was believed to have been found in the pool at around 1.20pm, when he was given first aid treatment at the scene by an on-duty lifeguard.

The child was rushed to Pafos General Hospital for imminent treatment. The doctors at the hospital praised the staff from the resort for their first aid efforts which saved the boy's life.

However, soon after his arrival at the general hospital, the boy was taken to Makario Children's Hospital in Nicosia, which is around 90 miles away, for further specialised treatment.

The Inverness youngster remains in a serious but stable condition. The mother and sibling of the boy are understood to be with him.

A source told the Daily Record that: "He was found unresponsive in the hotel pool by strangers on Friday."

They continued: "He was on holiday with his mum, who I believe has another child with her. He was resuscitated at the scene but he is fighting for life in hospital. He's very, very sick."

The Pafos Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are currently investigating the incident.

A spokesperson from the UK government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British national in hospital in Cyprus."
