Q How would you describe your business?

A Leslie Hairdressing is a five-star rated salon opposite Marks & Spencer in Eastgate precinct. We have a very experienced team of hairdressers with many years of involvement with the salon although we are always looking to recruit a larger team.

The original business started 70 years ago further along on High Street. It was opened by my father, Leslie Thomson, after he returned from the war. Dad and my mum, Finella, expanded to our current location at 8 Eastgate in the 1960’s, and over the years two other locations in the town centre which my older brothers, David and Brian, were involved in.

Since their retirement, it’s just the main premises being run by myself and my wife Kerry.

Q What led you into the business?

A I came straight into the family business in 1979 at age 16, starting my apprenticeship in our Drummond Street salon.

I furthered my training in London for a year when I was 18 studying at an internationally renowned academy, working full time in Hammersmith and Leicester Square.

I returned home to Eastgate and also worked in our Baron Taylors Street salon from 1988 settling back in Eastgate in 2001.

Q What is your greatest achievement?

A My biggest achievement is still running a successful business after all this time and it still being family-orientated.

We have been welcoming some of our clients for over 60 years and one or two were originally my dad’s. On the flip side, we welcome new guests and tourists through the door based on our reputation.

I have also trained some very skilled and motivated stylists who have gone on to own their own successful businesses. I have travelled the world with my hairdressing career attending seminars in the USA, the Caribbean, Thailand, Australia, South Africa and wonderful shows in cities such as Hong Kong, London, Rome, Madrid and Cannes, although some creations are better kept on the catwalk!

Q Who do you admire in business?

A It has to be Leslie, my dad and his dedication to his craft, business, clients, friends, family and hard work. Also meeting other business owners from around the country within and out with hairdressing during our time with business development group, 3-6-5, spearheaded by salon professionals.

They have influenced me greatly, as you need to be brave and have faith in your commitments.

Q What’s your advice to budding entrepreneurs?

A My advice is to know your business and demographic inside and out, working hard, knowing your week-to- week, month-to-month finances, how to break even and maintain a healthy bank balance. Being willing to take calculated risks and try new things keeps you motivated but always stay true to your core values.

Q Can you tell us more about yourself?

A I’ve been married to Kerry for 20 years in May next year. I have a son, Finlay, who is living the best life in Fernie, Canada and we have a daughter Emily who is planning a gap year before university. We also have a naughty but loveable, black three-year-old pug called Kevin.

I enjoy getting outdoors to walk the dog and have a passion for sports including skiing, my e-mountain bike, golf, curling and football.
