A TRIO of Highland community groups are celebrating after they won grants worth £900 from a major supermarket.

Highland Disability Sport, Cheerful Chesters and Inverness CYC YMCA all received cash from the Asda Inverness store after shoppers plumped for them in the latest round of ‘Green Token Given’ donations.

These tokens are handed out to shoppers at the till for them to place in a box belonging to their preferred group.

The causes are then given cash based on their popularity – with the most successful receiving £500 and the other two getting £200 apiece.

Highland Disability Sport received the largest of the donations. It provides sport and leisure opportunities for people with disabilities throughout the region, regardless of age or ability.

Cheerful Chesters aim to improve the quality of life for people in Inverness affected by chest, heart and stroke illness, through exercise to music and circuit training, followed by a cup of tea and chat.

While the YMCA is an inclusive Christian youth organisation, open to people of all faiths, which works to transform the lives of children and young people.

Asda Inverness’s dedicated community champion, Joy Milne, said: “We are very honoured to be able to continually support local charity groups from across Inverness.

“At Asda, we’re always thrilled when customers nominated charities close to them to be in with the chance of benefitting from these vital funding boosts.

“We couldn’t be happier showing our appreciation by helping as much as we can with these latest donations and raising awareness of the hard work done by all groups.”

Mrs Janet Home MBE, Chairman and Founding Member at Highland Disability Sport, added: “The entire team at Highland Disability Sport would like to thank Asda Inverness for this incredibly generous donation.

“Charitable grants and donations are vital in helping us continue the work we do and helping support as many local people as possible.

“The £500 donation from the Asda Foundation is greatly appreciated and will be a huge help to us, it is also a bonus to know that we are supported by members of the wider local community too,” he added.
