THE intensive car ward at Raigmore Hospital has reopened to new admissions after a norovirus outbreak - but the cardiac unit is likely to remain shut into next week.

The intensive care ward was closed to new admissions and transfers on November 17 after two patients tested positive for norovirus. It has now been deep cleaned and has reopened today.

Ward 6C, which was closed to new admissions and transfers more than a week ago, remains closed and is unlikely to open before next week, NHS Highland has warned.

Eight patients have had symptoms of diarrhoea and/or vomiting, of these eight four have tested positive for norovirus. Visiting is being kept to an absolute minimum.

Norovirus, which causes diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, can spread in the air where someone has had diarrhoea or has vomited, and is extremely difficult to contain. It may also spread by touching surfaces contaminated by the vomit or diarrhoea.
