MORE than 2000 survivors and families affected by the scourge of addiction marched in a moving declaration of hope through Inverness last Saturday.

The Recovery Walk Scotland drew together people from all over the country in remembrance of loved ones who had lost their lives to drugs and alcohol and in celebration of life beyond addiction.

Some 1187 died from addiction and related issues last year alone. Tears were shed beside the River Ness, where red roses were raised aloft and tossed into the water, each to mark a lost loved one. Organisers described the march as a resounding success.

“It was a joyful celebration of recovery, tinged with poignancy,” co-organiser Elisabeth Smart, a local NHS public health consultant, said.

“The roses ceremony at the memorial service and serenity prayer, where everyone held hands, was particularly moving.”
