An Inverness primary school has enjoyed a performance from a visiting US singing group because of its activities in the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths.

The Georgia Institute of Technology Glee Club’s leader spotted online that Crown Primary had a special interest in STEM subjects, led by principal teacher Cat Morton, and also in the arts.

The all-male singing group includes aerospace, chemical, mechanical, electrical, nuclear, civil, biomedical, and computer engineers, but Crown head teacher Miriam MacDonald said they wanted to demonstrate that people involved in “techy” subjects can still express themselves through song and dance.

She added: “They showed that although their interests are science and technology, you can still be fun and extrovert. The school was too small to host the event, but the Crown Church, who are terrific neighbours of ours, agreed to let us go there. All the children from P3 upwards attended.”

And it turned out to be quite a party.

Jerry Ulrich, director of choral activities at Georgia Tech’s school of music, and a former lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, said: “In perusing the websites of the Highland Council, Crown Primary surfaced as a school that seemed to best align with our STEM focus and interest in music. You cannot hide on the world wide web.

“I think our Georgia Tech ‘engineers in training’ enjoyed engaging with the Inverness students, both through singing and the informal Q&A that followed.”

The group also performed at Dornoch Cathedral.
