MORE than 2300 competitors took part in a testing mix of running, climbing and even wading at this year’s Loch Ness Beast Race.

Held last Saturday the annual event was bigger and better than ever with a brand new route, new obstacles and even more mud and muck for everyone to climb over, crawl under and drag themselves through – before plunging into the loch itself.

The epic 10k obstacle race takes participants over some very tough, stamina-testing terrain.

Obstacles include a wall of chest height bales, ice cold jet water blasts and a deep swamp crossing.

This year’s finale took the form of a massive launch pad where runners were launched horizontally off a water slide.

The event raises money for Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland.

Fundraising manager Paul Corrigan said the organisation was thrilled to have been the Beast Race’s official charity partner again this year.

“It’s an incredible event with a great atmosphere, with plenty of laughs, fabulous fancy dress and unwavering camaraderie amongst the brave beast runners who go above and beyond to help one another over the obstacles,” he said.

“All money raised stays in Scotland and helps people living with chest, heart and stroke conditions, making sure they can live life to the full with the right support when and where they need it.”

Winners: Men: Gavin Hogarth, 49:13; 2, Rowan White, 54:58; Michael Stone, 57:44; Women: Laura Mackay, 1:03:44; Cat Macleod: 1:03:45; Isla Horsburgh 1:07:03.
