WORK to demolish the fire-damaged Eastgate Hostel in Inverness city centre could start in January.

Last week we reported how plans to remove the scaffolding and front of the building had been approved by council planners.

Now the owners have revealed applications have been submitted for the rebuilding of the main structure and creation of two new flats above proposed shops for the site.

In a joint statement issued through G H Johnston building consultants, it was confirmed that Alison Girvan of Girvans restaurant has sold her interest in the building to the remaining two owners, Imtaiz Ali and a Mr Cheng.

They say they hope to have a contract for demolition in place by the end of November.

However the statement added: "Mr Ali and Mr Cheng will take into account the views of the other traders in Eastgate and Stephen’s Brae regarding starting the demolition going into the busy Christmas shopping period and may consider a start in early January."

Highland Council’s city centre manager David Haas welcomed the news.

"We are delighted with the positive statement and the fact that we are now seeing a concrete proposal for the removal of the scaffolding and further development of the site," he said, adding that the council recognised the need to balance a wish to get on with the work quickly with the needs of neighbouring traders.

"We will be in contact with the owners and traders through Inverness Business Improvement District to help them find the best solution," he said.

Inverness Central councillor Bet McAllister said she was "disappointed" at the news that work might not start before the new year.

"At the last meeting it seemed as though they would be starting work soon," she said.

"If it’s left until after Christmas there is a good chance nothing will be done until February or March because of the weather."
