AN Inverness homes builder is the only Scottish nominee for a prestigious UK-wide award recognising the quality of urban regeneration work.

Highland Housing Alliance, based at Castle Heather, has been short-listed for best regeneration project at the Inside Housing Development Awards.

The development at the former Glendoe Terrace, now known as Merkinch Place, features 53 homes for affordable and mid-market rent, as well as low-cost home ownership, transforming the historic but previously derelict site a mile from the city centre.

Inside Housing is an industry body within the UK social housing sector offering landlords, developers and architects the chance to showcase their best developments.

It includes refurbishment of a nearby children’s play area as well as two specially-tailored homes suitable for people with disabilities.

The project was a successful partnership between Highland Housing Alliance, Highland Council, the City Region Deal and the Scottish Government, with O’Brien Properties the main contractor.

Highland Housing Alliance chief executive Gail Matheson said: “The nomination highlights the great work done in regenerating the site at Glendoe Terrace. The site was derelict for years and has been repeatedly subject to anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping.

“We have successfully turned it into a comfortable and affordable place to live, which has been hugely beneficial for the local community. We involved them throughout the project, inviting residents for feedback as well as allowing children from Merkinch Primary School to design artwork seen within the development.

“It’s an honour to be considered for such a prestigious award,” she added.

Winners will be announced on November 27 at the Intercontinental 02 Hotel in London.
