A malfunctioning light led police to arrest a man on suspicion of dealing drugs.

When an officer stopped a car driven by 30-year-old Essex man Antoni Anastas, in Dunabban Road, in Inverness, he was so nervous and uneasy that more officers were called in to search it under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Procurator fiscal Alison Young told Sheriff David Harvie that Anastas had £520 and scales with white powder in the central console.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Anastas, who said he was on holiday staying with a friend in Skinner Court, Inverness, was then taken to Burnett Road Police Station in Inverness for a further search.

"Nine bags of white powder were found in sports socks as well as £3100 in cash," Ms Young said. "They tested for cocaine and it had a street value of £900. The property at Skinner Court was then searched and £4800 was found under a bedside cabinet and £320 in a purse on a TV stand."

Anastas had been remanded in custody pending sentence and he appeared before Sheriff Sara Matheson who jailed him for a year. It was backdated to June 6.

Solicitor Duncan Henderson said: "My client expects a prison sentence. He has no address and has run out of funds."
