Sheriff Robert Frazer heard the case at Inverness Justice Centre.

A 39-year-old Auldearn man shouted and swore at his partner who was angry with him listening to loud music and smoking in her presence.

But when the intoxicated Jamie Burns went outside to have his cigarette, his partner locked him out of his home in George Wilson Road for a short while.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Burns, on his return inside, pushed the woman and later began verbally abusing her. He admitted threatening or abusive behaviour.

Fiscal depute Victoria Silver said: "Later in the evening, his partner phoned her sister crying and he could be heard in the background shouting and swearing."

Police were informed and when officers arrived, she was still distressed, Ms Silver added.

Defence solicitor John MacColl told Sheriff Robert Frazer: "His position is that when he got back in, she attacks him and he had injuries as a result.

"She claimed she was assaulted by him but when she was examined, there were no apparent injuries.

"It was only some 12 hours later that she turned up at the police station with injuries and there is a view that she did that to herself."

As Burns was on a community payback order, Sheriff Frazer deferred sentence on him until June 22 for a background report.
