An Inverness singer-songwriter who soared to fame after becoming a TikTok sensation has been named as one of 2023’s essential emerging artists.

Influential music magazine NME listed Katie Gregson-MacLeod as one of 100 hot up-and-coming acts tipped for great success in the coming year.

The 21-year-old’s 45-second video of her demo track Complex went viral on the social media platform and has since topped 8.1 million views on the social media channel.

The young artist signed with Columbia Records in September after a bidding war by top labels, before releasing a re-working of Complex and then an EP titled Songs Written for Piano.

NME said Ms Gregson-MacLeod would appeal to fans of Adele and Matt Maltese, adding: “After Gregson-MacLeod’s poignant Complex (Demo) went viral last summer – with stars like Camila Cabello and Madison Beer covering the tune – the Scottish artist proved she was far from a one-hit-wonder with her stellar second EP, Songs Written For Piano.

“Coupling raw vulnerability with gorgeous vocals and slick songwriting know-how, the five-track effort offered a glimpse of the 21-year-old’s immense potential.”

The magazine names her song White Lies as the key track.

Writing on Instagram late last year, she said: “My EP Songs Written for Piano is out. These songs mean a lot to me and I can’t wait for them to be out in the world.

“I feel very, very lucky to have been around a piano my whole life.

“Growing up, it was always the instrument I turned to for writing, and it feels so fitting to be releasing this body of work following a life-altering few months which has brought in so many new ears.”
