HIGHLAND holidays are becoming an ever bigger draw according to research from Travelodge, the UK’s largest independent hotel brand.

The region climbed three places in the company’s league table of staycation destinations in its annual holiday index – moving to number six in this year’s top 10 and replacing Edinburgh as the most popular region in Scotland for stay at home holidays.

UK-wide, Cornwall retains the number one position while last year’s number two, London, has now been overtaken by Devon and the Lake District.

The Travelodge 2017 holiday index predicts another busy year for the UK’s holiday industry with just over half – 55 per cent – of British adults holidaying in Britain over the next few months, a slight drop on the 58 per cent who chose a staycation in 2016.

While the report indicates holiday makers will be spending less on their break this year, dropping an average of £130 from £720.80 in 2016 to £599.80 in 2017, that still equates to a collective spend of £17 billion for the UK economy.

Travelodge spokeswoman Shakila Ahmed said: “Our research shows that 2017 is set to be another strong year for the staycation, which is great news for our economy.

“The current weakness of the pound means more Britons are choosing a staycation this summer whilst foreign tourists are making the most of their strong currency and flocking to Britain. Our Travelodge hotels are gearing up for a busy summer.”
