Highland MSP Emma Roddick visited the Inverness Justice Centre recently to hear about the introduction of “virtual courts” there.

The Inverness Justice Centre, opened in March 2020, has facilities in place that allow for witnesses to give evidence in court virtually, or remotely, without having to enter the court room itself.

Ms Roddick, SNP MSP for the Highlands, said: “It was really interesting to get to visit the Inverness Justice Centre last week, the first time I have managed to visit since it was moved from the castle.

“I was really glad to hear about the steps they are taking towards a trauma-informed approach, ensuring that those giving evidence have support through Victim Support Scotland, but also by offering witnesses a separate entrance and the opportunity to give their evidence remotely in an area outwith the main courtroom.

“These changes are really important and much needed in the justice system.

When witnesses are called to give evidence, this can reopen the trauma of the initial incident all over again.

“Steps must be taken in order to protect witnesses and victims when going through the court process.”
