THE director of the Highland Military Tattoo is “fairly confident” a last-ditch battle can save it from the axe.

The spectacular annual event, which was relocated to Fort George three years ago, is facing financial crisis after accumulating losses of nearly £40,000.

Unless new public or private sector funding is forthcoming, there are fears it could be cancelled.

Earlier this week the tattoo board met to decide whether or not to go ahead with the high-profile event and itsTattoo director, Major General Seymour Monro, said the talks were promising.

“Our finances are looking much better than they were a month ago and, subject to further discussions about funding support, we are planning to go ahead for 2017,” he said.

“We are not prepared to take the final decision until we have got all final funding arrangements in place and I think that will be done by December 1, but it is looking very much more promising.

“ I think we will probably be going ahead. I’m fairly confident.”
