The amount of money raised for local charities by the annual Highland Cross event has topped £5 million.

This year’s event, the 36th edition of the mammoth race across some of the north’s toughest terrain, raised £307,566 – an increase of more than £27,000 on last year’s record total.

The top fundraising team of Willie Gray, Richard McGrail and Allan Maguire raised a total of £15,362.83.

Money raised from the event was handed over to charities from across the north at an event hosted by main backer Hawco VW.

Abriachan Forest Trust, Blythswood Care, the Oxygen Works and Highland Hospice are among the primary beneficiaries, while the success of the participants will allow grants to be distributed to other good causes.

Highland Cross co-founder and organising secretary Calum Munro said: “We are now well into the planning for the 37th Highland Cross in June 2019.

“Over a third of a century of service to Highland communities is something that the wonderful team of volunteers, sponsors and supporting organisations can be justly proud of.

“Some of our volunteers have been with us since the start and in some cases the children and grandchildren of original supporters are now volunteers on the cross.

“Highland Cross exists to raise money for medical and social causes in the north of Scotland and with the continued efforts of the fantastic community of sponsors, volunteers and supportive organisations that creates the Highland Cross, we look forward to supporting yet more hard working causes in 2019.”
