The leader of Highland Council Margaret Davidson has decided to quit the local authority at the May elections.

She has been a councillor since 1995 and has led the council administration as the head of the independent group since 2015.

The Aird and Loch Ness member initially made the announcement to the independent group at the end of last week’s full council meeting.

Her time as leader has been marred by increasing financial hardship for the council with tighter budgets and debt mounting to more than £1.6 billion.
