Highland Council has issued advice.

HIGHLAND Council has moved to reassure its tenants that its housing stock is safe following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in London.

At least 79 people are missing presumed dead following last week's fire, and there are fears this number could rise.

Exterior cladding on the tower block has come under intense scrutiny in the days since the fire, after video footage showed the flames rushing up the outside of the high-rise building.

Highland Council owns a number of multi-storey flats but does not have high-rise buildings above five storeys.

A spokeswoman said: “All council homes in Highland are fitted with mains wired smoke detectors. We advise all tenants to check regularly that their smoke detector is working. If it is not, or if they have difficulty checking it themselves, we will be able to help.

“Tenants should also make sure that there are no combustible items left in stairwells and that stairs are left unobstructed.”
