Some bus services in the Highlands are being cancelled until further notice due to Storm Babet.

Highland Council has announced that all of its in-house bus services will be suspended from midday on Thursday.

"The suspension is due to the wind forecast for Storm Babet," said the council in a statement.

"Extremely high winds are forecast, with gusts expected to be in excess of 50mph from midday today for the next 24 hours.

"A further review and update will be provided at midday on Friday, October 20.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

There was better news for passengers using Stagecoach's bus services, with the operator confirming earlier today that many of its services were running.

However, it did warn that disruption could strike at "short notice" and advised people to travel only is "absolutely necessary".

In a statement shortly before 8am, it said: "Due to the weather warning in place for high winds and severe rain, there may be some disruption to services or short notice cancellations.

"We advise only to travel if absolutely necessary. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause,"

One service that was cancelled however was the Cairngorm mountain bus service from Aviewmore (the number 30) which was cancelled for the rest of Thursday due to the high winds.
