Highland Council has confirmed it will proceed with plans to issue an additional smaller green household waste bins to residents, as first revealed in the Courier back in November.

Under the proposals agreed at the Communities and Place Committee, residents would get one more smaller wheelie bin for household waste and the current household waste bin would be used for recycling.

That would see the current green general waste bin used to collect mixed containers – plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays, cans, tins, foil, cartons, and potentially soft plastics – while the existing blue recycling bin will be used to collect paper and card.

To fund the proposals for a new recycling service, the council will apply to the Scottish Government’s Improvement Fund and if that is successful the new bins would be issued in April 2024.

Chairman of Communities and Place Committee, Councillor Graham MacKenzie said: “The proposed roll out of new service changes will help enable the Council to meet its recycling commitments.

“The application to the Recycling Improvement Fund is truly an outstanding piece of work which covers all the bases required. I thank the Waste Team for their efforts and hope that the Council’s application is successful.”

He added: “Informing the public on any changes to future services will be a key factor in the roll-out of the service.”
