Highland Council aims for 114 new 20mph zones by next summer with Transport Scotland picking up the tab.

Highland Council has submitted a recommendation to Transport Scotland that 114 sites be included as part of their National 20mph Implementation Strategy after an assessment of a total of 165 existing 30mph zones.

If accepted, the implementation will be fully funded by the government as the local authority is an “early adopter” of the scheme and they could be implemented by next summer.

The council’s economy and infrastructure committee chairman Ken Gowans said: “I’m delighted that following the completion of assessments set against specific criteria we are in a position to put forward a recommendation that 114 locations have 20mph speed limits.

“Having so many 20mph limits introduced simultaneously is going to bring health benefits, community benefits and safety benefits.

“This is a very ambitious project. The 114 sites equate to 590km of road network. We intend to have all preparation work completed as soon as possible so all of the 20mph sites can be operational by next summer.”
