A local volunteer has had their service in helping the young people of the Highlands recognised by royalty.

Captain Bart Lucas (76), from 1st Battalion The Highlanders, was invested with his MBE at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, The Princess Royal.

Capt Lucas has been a volunteer with the Army Cadets since December 1976, serving previously with the Royal Air Force.

He is also formerly a member of Northern Constabulary, now part of Police Scotland.

Throughout his 47 years of volunteering with the cadets he has held a variety of posts, from Detachment Commander and Company Commander to Adventure Training Officer and Duke of Edinburgh Award Officer, some he has held several times over his long career.

Prior to retirement Capt Lucas was also a full time employee with the Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, which look after cadet buildings and administration of cadet units, where he was employed as the Battalion's administration officer working at their headquarters in Inverness, on top of being a volunteer with the cadets.

He is currently Detachment Commander for Culloden Detachment and the second in command for the Battalion’s Moray Company.

Capt Lucas was recognised in last year's King's Birthday Honours for his long devoted service to Army Cadets and the young people of the Highlands.
