Staff, volunteers and service users at a mental health charity are celebrating after its Recovery Centre in Inverness was rated excellent.

The grading from the Care Inspectorate was for the facility run by Birchwood Highland.

Excellent is the highest possible grading and this was the premises’ fifth successive top rating following inspection.

Having celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, Birchwood Highland Recovery Centre has continued to excel in providing person-centred support for those experiencing mental ill health at its 23-bed facility.

All of Birchwood Highland’s work is based upon the key concepts of independence, inclusion and recovery, and the centre aims to assist people to take control of their lives and move forward positively.

The centre welcomes people who really want to work towards their recovery, by building up skills, knowledge and self-esteem; and developing networks so that they can successfully move on to their own accommodation in the community.

Inspectors scrutinised many different aspects of its working processes and policies and spoke to some of the people who use the service.

Feedback from users included: “I don’t know where I would be without the staff support.”

The report stated: “Birchwood Highland Recovery Centre was providing an excellent level of service, which demonstrated outstanding or sector-leading qualities.”

Birchwood Highland deputy chief executive and Recovery Centre manager Annabel Mowat said: “As we all engage and support each other in mental health recovery, staff and residents are delighted.

“The excellent grading is also testimony to the team and the passion they have to support people to help them achieve the best they can.”
