TACKLING the problem of antibiotic resistant superbugs in the Highlands needs the support of residents, local NHS experts have said.

Speaking after European Antibiotic Awareness Day. Dr Adam Brown, consultant microbiologist at NHS Highland said urged people to use antibiotics more wisely.

He said: "Overusing or misusing antibiotics can cause bacteria to become resistant meaning that current treatments will no longer work. Currently, 700,000 people die of antibiotic resistant infections every year, a figure estimated to rise to 10 million by 2050 unless action is taken."

"Antibiotics do not get rid of viruses such as the cold or flu. The best thing you can do for those is to take plenty of fluids, paracetamol and plenty of rest."
