Virtual sessions have replaced face-to-face meetings for vulnerable cancer patients during lockdown.

Move More Highlands is led by Martin Godwin for High Life Highland in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.

Recently diagnosed with cancer Mr Godwin (35) has first-hand experience of why physical activity can be so beneficial.

He said: “I was diagnosed with cancer in November and it came as a bit of a shock, especially when I was told I’d need chemotherapy.

“Being involved in the Move More programme, I know how important physical activity is for people affected by cancer so, prior to surgery, I would go for regular walks and runs.

“It really helped me prepare physically, aid my recovery, helped me process what was happening and clear my head.

“Having Move More at home could prove to be very beneficial to a lot of people. We’re so rural in the Highlands so not everyone can always get to our classes. We can now offer guidance and support on how to get online and reach everybody across the Highlands. I would encourage anyone to join – they will certainly be very welcome.”

Steve Walsh, chief executive of High Life Highland, said: “We are delighted to be able to support people affected by cancer to continue to exercise, especially at this time where many are shielding due to being clinically extremely vulnerable.

“We are especially proud of Martin and the great job he is doing to support people affected by cancer following his own treatment. His positivity and hard work has meant the programme has been quickly adapted for the benefit of many people across Highland.”
