HEAVY snow has sparked the cancellation of trains on the Inverness-Aberdeen line after it caused a signal fault between Huntly and Insch.

ScotRail was warning that the 8.23am Aberdeen to Inverness, 8.55am Inverness to Aberdeen, and 10.10am Aberdeen to Inverness have been cancelled due to the fault.

The earlier 4.56am Inverness to Edinburgh service terminated at Huntly, and the 5.39am Dundee to Inverness, which travels via Aberdeen, terminated at Inverurie.

ScotRail warned that the disruption is expected to continue until 11am.

A ScotRail spokesman said: "We have received reports of a signal fault caused by heavy snow between Huntly and Insch. Our services are unable to operate between Huntly and Insch until staff have rectified the fault.

"Our staff are on site and we will provide an update as soon as possible. Please note alternative transport is not guaranteed, therefore passengers are advised to consider making their own alternative arrangements. Please use the help point or speak to a member of staff for any further information."

The snow-related signal fault comes amid an ongoing yellow warning for snow and ice across the Highlands, Moray and Aberdeenshire. This is expected to remain in force until midday on Friday.
