A VAN was badly damaged when floodlight units destined for a Western Isles music festival fell off a lorry in Inverness.

Benbecula haulier Donald Buchanan (50) admitted having the unsecured load in the Highland capital on July 23, 2019.

Defence solicitor Willie Young told Inverness Sheriff Court: “He was picking up the units to take back to Benbecula. They had been loaded by the supply company in Inverness but he was not there to supervise.”

Mr Young said that when his client came to secure the units, it was not possible to do it the way he wanted because of the way they had been loaded.

“He lashed them at the front and rear but the handbrakes on the units were not working properly. This put more strain on the lashing straps and when he took a corner, the units fell off.”

Fining Buchanan £500, Sheriff Robert Frazer said: “It is fortunate that no more serious injury or damage was caused.”
