An exciting exhibition of textile works made by women in the Highlands is to go on show at Eden Court.
Highland Women Making History will see a range of banners displayed at the venue’s Stalls Gallery next month, made in and by communities as part of a giant UK-wide collaborative art project managed by Artichoke Art.

The banners were commissioned to celebrate 100 years since women got the vote and reflect on issues important to them.
Highland artists Alicia Hendrick, Chris Hammacott, Lizzie McDougall, Alex Patience, Christina Inster, Deidre Nelson, Kirsty O’Conner and Heidi Soos were commissioned to work with women to create the banners.
Lizzie McDougall, of Highland StoryQuilts, has volunteered to bring as many of them as possible together for the Inverness exhibition.
“We are very grateful to Eden Court for this opportunity to show them together,” she said.
To compliment the banners women across the region have also been working on individual textile pieces on a theme of women’s empowerment, which will also be on display.
The banners were originally made for Proccessions, a mass participatory artwork with100 women artists around the UK commissioned to create them as an expression of gratitude to women who worked to get the vote and to give voice to issues of importance to women now.
Tens of thousands of women took part in events that included processions in 2018 in all four UK capitals and a London exhibition.
A planned wider UK tour had to be cancelled due to Covid before Eden Court offered to display the Highland banners this March.
Eden Court’s Jim Love Studio will also be the venue on Friday, March 8 – International Women’s Day – for a special event exploring some of the ongoing challenges women face and celebrating their impact in making the world a better place.
From 4pm many of the artists will tell the stories illustrated on the works, along with live music and a display from Fairtrade Ullapool. The event is free.
The exhibition is set to run from March 3-17.
