An animal rescue charity that is moving to Nairn is appealing for volunteers.

Tia Rescue is relocating from Doncaster after facing cuts to its funding during the pandemic.

The charity has now purchased Easter Hardmuir Farm where it hopes to continue its work of rescuing, caring for and rehoming greyhounds and horses.

With around 30 dogs arriving tomorrow and 27 horses arriving at the end of this week, the charity is in desperate need of volunteers.

Charity founder Deborah Rothery said: “We probably need around two or three volunteers daily to help with the dogs mainly.

“All people need to volunteer is to love dogs, and not be scared of some cleaning.

“We can’t afford staff in the meantime so any help would be appreciated.”

Tia Rescue was set up by Ms Rothery 26 years ago, housing more than 100 greyhounds at one point.

Due to the pandemic, Tia Rescue was forced to shut four of its five charity shops which were based in England.

“We lost 60 per cent of our funding overnight,” Ms Rothery said.

The hope is that the move to Nairn will help the charity’s finances and mean it can continue its vital work.

Greyhounds are used as racing dogs in the UK and many of them face cruelty and no home after they have passed their racing days. Ms Rothery added: “After they have been used for racing, they are seen as of no use to anyone. We pick up the pieces we can.”
