Pedestrians and motorists were in for a surprise on the way past an Inverness school this morning – after a traffic light caught fire!

The bizarre sight occurred in Caulfield Road at around 8am, with social media images of the scene clearly showing flames licking around the melting green light.

Inverness South ward councillor Duncan Macpherson was among those to share the surreal images.

Posting one on Facebook he said: "Traffic light on fire at Caulfield Road at the school crossing between Cradlehall Primary School and the shopping centre at Cradlehall, Inverness."
He continued: "This photo was sent to me by a constituent who was walking along the pavement this morning after 8am when they spotted this bizarre scene."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said one of its Inverness fire engines was dispatched to the scene at around 8.10am. The crew extinguished the fire and left the site by 8.45am.

A spokesperson said they then handed over to Highland Council staff to deal with the light's electrics.

Highland Council said it hoped to have the lights fully repaired by Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: "Our lighting team were alerted to this this morning and attended at the same time as the fire brigade.

"There was an electrical fault in one of the pedestrian crossing signal heads which caused it to go on fire. We have operatives on site and hope to the signals back in operation later today subject to not finding further damage in the signal controller."
