In a bid to reduce food waste in the Inverness area a community group set up two pop-up community tables so that local residents could collect meals which would otherwise have been thrown away.
It was organised by the Scottish Highlands and Islands and Moray Chinese Association (SHIMCA) and the two collection points were set up in the Highland capital and Nairn – food was also distributed directly to residents in Elgin.
Monica Lee-Macpherson, the group’s chairwoman and trustee, said they publicised the initiative via the group’s Facebook page and they were overwhelmed by the response.
The Inverness collection point was at their base in Ardconnel Terrace and there were already people waiting when they opened up last Sunday.
Mrs Lee-Macpherson said: “People were queuing up and I was so pleased that the post had worked. We managed to get rid of almost everything.”
They were offered the food by the Asda branch in Elgin because the café was due to close and the frozen catering packs – including items such as chips, chicken curry pies and macaroni cheese – would have otherwise gone to waste.
Mrs Lee-Macpherson said: “It was a good idea and an example of community spirit.”
